Summer Learning and Volunteering
Schools are out for summer! (Or they will be soon!) Kids spend the entire month waiting for the chance to sleep in and get a break from their routines. The surplus of youngsters running around town provides a new line up of volunteer opportunities. Area agencies are hosting summer feeding and learning camps to keep kids nourished and excited about learning (without the kids knowing of course) over the next couple of months.
Feeding and Enrichment: Food insecurity is a problem in Story County year round. Numbers from 2013 show that about 20% of Story County residents do not know where their next meal is coming from. When school is out and kids don’t get lunch everyday the problem gets worse. United Way of Story County is working with a number of community partners to provide summer feeding and enrichment programs in Ames and Nevada.
These programs will run six weeks over the summer. Volunteer positions are available to serve a meal, assist with enrichment activities and tutor literacy. They need lots of volunteers to make these programs possible. If you are interested in helping with the Ames program, click here. If you are interested in helping in Nevada, click here.
United Way is using Volunteer Spot to organize the volunteer sign ups. The system will ask for your email, but you do not need to create an account and the system will not use your email for anything except to send you reminders. If you have any questions you can call United Way at (515) 268-5142.
Outdoors: After the rough winter kids (any everybody else) should spend some time outside. Story County Conservation has a variety of camps and events to get the whole family out, and they need volunteers to make the programs run. There are plenty of opportunities for tree-huggers to share their love of nature this summer.
Art: For the creative volunteers Octagon Center of the Arts has summer camps for all ages. Share your painting, sculpting and other art talents by volunteering to help at their camps. Maybe you’ll find inspiration for your next project.
There are loads of other volunteer opportunities for the summer months! If working with kids isn’t your thing scroll through the opportunities on vcstory.org. Click the green volunteer box to get started.
