The Volunteer Center of Story County, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) partnered to hold the 7th annual Winter Weatherization Challenge on Saturday, November 2nd. About 150 volunteers helped make about 28 homes and two shelters more energy-efficient by putting plastic over windows, insulating light switches and outlets and providing draft dodgers for doors.
The purpose of this project is to help low-income, elderly and disabled residents keep their heating costs down while keeping their homes comfortable. Every year is successful and the goal for next year is to be able to weatherize even more homes with more volunteers!
The Winter Weatherization Challenge is made possible thanks to funding from the City of Ames, GRANT, etc, with food donations from Panera Bread in Ames.
Everything ran smoothly this year. Volunteers met at the Annex on South Sheldon and dispersed to their assigned homes all over the county. Many volunteers had a great experience getting to know the homeowners and their pets.
We are extremely thankful to all of the volunteers who helped make this day successful. We hope to see you back next year!
