This week Ames has doubled in size, school is back in session and life is feeling a little hectic. The Volunteer Center of Story County wants to remind you that volunteering is an important thing to make time for. Whether you are a college student looking for real world experience, a family who wants to spend more time together or a group who wants to bond volunteering can help you meet your goals and benefit our community.

If you are new to the Ames area and don’t think that there is a great need for volunteers guess again. The Volunteer Center currently has 91 volunteer opportunities from 79 agencies listed on our website. In 2011 the US Census found the poverty rate in Story County was 19%. The poverty rate for the state of Iowa was 11.9%. In 2012, three Ames Elementary Schools had free and reduced lunch rates of over 40%.

Also, if you are a student who wants to feel more at home in Ames, volunteering can help you get to know the community and its members.
